Lawrenceburg Indiana Outdoor Activities

There are always outdoor activities for your visit to Dearborn County, highlighted by skiing and skateboarding.

In the winter season, skiing, snowboarding, and tubing is available at the Perfect North Ski Slopes in Lawrenceburg. The slopes are usually open from mid-December to early March and feature 225 energy-efficient, high-volume snow guns.

Whether you are an experienced skier or a first-timer, North Ski Slopes has something for you. The ski area includes five chair lifts, six carpet lifts, 23 trails, and 25 tubing lanes.

Each admission ticket is valid for up to eight consecutive hours and also includes tubing. Each ticket includes a one-hour introductory skiing or riding lesson. There are also lodging packages, which include two lift tickets.

There is a separate area designed just for beginners and there are one-hour lessons available. Parents can also use this area to teach their child/children (age six and under) in addition to lessons being offered for children aged 4-6.

As many as three tubes can link together on the tubing runs. There is also a small separate tubing area for children aged 3-6 with parental supervision.

For fun when it is not winter time, a great way to have fun for free is the Lawrenceburg Skatepark. The skatepark is in great condition, about 12,000 square feet, and has three bowls of various heights. There are ledge and box combinations, regular and pool coping, cradle banks, and a street course.

Whether you are just learning how to skate or are an experienced skateboarder, this is one of the top concrete skate parks in the state. It also has lights for nighttime skating.

Dearborn County Casinos and Racing

Dearborn County in Indiana features two nearby casinos and race tracks for great fun and entertainment.

The Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg sits on the banks of the Ohio River, minutes from I-275. It features 3,200 slots and electronic table games, more than 88 table games, and 41 live poker tables.

The Argosy Casino and Hotel is also located in Lawrenceburg and contains three levels with restaurants, bars, and lounges. The Argosy VI is a riverboat casino with more than 2,000 slot machines and 97 game tables on three decks. There is also a 300-room hotel on the site.

Each of the properties provide gambling on the riverboats as they cruise the waters of the Ohio River and each are located about 20 minutes from Cincinnati.

For those interested in horse racing and betting, there are great opportunities in Cincinnati (fewer than 30 miles away) and Louisville (less than 100 miles from Dearborn County).

Thoroughbred racing is held in the spring and summer at River Downs in Cincinnati as it has been since 1925. It featured two appearances by Seabiscuit in 1936 and its 1976 apprentice and overall jockey leader Steve Cauthen launched his Hall of Fame career that included the most recent Triple Crown winner Affirmed at the track.

Louisville is the site of Churchill Downs, one of the most famous horse tracks in the United States and home of the Kentucky Derby the first Saturday of each May in the beginning of the racing season at the track. “The Run for the Roses” began in 1875 and has become one of the greatest spectacles in American sports.

Lawrenceburg is the largest city in Indiana’s Dearborn County. The city is a mere fifteen minutes from Cincinnati.  Lawrenceburg also serves as the county seat of Dearborn county. The town is located on the Ohio River. The United States Census Bureau recorded the town’s total area at 5 square miles. .1 square miles of this area is water and the rest is land.

Who are the People in Your Neighborhood: Lawrenceburg Demographics

The 2000 census recorded that the town had a population of 4,685. Of those 4,685 people, there were 1,914 households recorded. 1,140 families live within the city. Of those households, 36 percent are married couples, 18 percent are female residents with no husband in the household, and 40 percent are comprised of non-families. The average household size was 2.28. 2.94 was the size of the average family.

24 percent of the population is under age 18. 11.5 percent are between the ages of 18 and 24. 28.3 percent have ages ranged between 25 to 44. 20 percent are aged from 45 to 64. 15.8 percent are over age 65. Lawrenceburg’s median age is 35 years. There were 86 males for every 100 females over 18.

Lawrenceburg has a population density of 956 people per square mile. The housing density is 441 per square mile and 2,162 housing units. Lawrenceburg’s population has an almost 94 percent white racial makeup. Lawrenceburg Township’s largest ethnicities are German Americans at 29 percent, followed by 19 percent Irish Americans. African Americans are next at 4.18 percent and .15 percent of the township is Native American. Finally, Asian ethnicities make up .45 percent of the town and .04 percent are from the Pacific Islands.

The average income for a Lawrenceburg household was just under $30,000. Families had a median income of just under $40,000. The average income for males in Lawrenceburg is nearly $10,000 higher than that of Lawrenceburg females: females make $21,985 per year while men make $31,543.

Famous Water Ways

There are three major water ways in the the Dearborn County area. These major water ways began their existence when glaciers were melting and they helped to carve and divert paths for the streams, rivers, and lakes that are seen all across the state of Indiana. These water ways are by no means considered small, and they have been providing life saving, town making water for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The first of the major water ways is the Ohio River. This river is the life force for much of the industry seen on both the Indiana side, and the Ohio side. For Dearborn County, this means that mills are able to operate, and contribute revenue. The Ohio river is also used for entertainment purposes for casinos that are located within Dearborn County for the purpose of river boat casino adventures.

The second river is the Blue River. This river is vital the surrounding area for the wildlife, plant life, and for farming. Today it is used as a way to take campers and tourist on canoe tours of covered bridges, and other historically scenic venues. The final river is the White Water River. This river has a nice history about it, as it was the one major contributing element for settlement. When settlers began entering what is now Dearborn County, they developed a plan to divert some of the water from the White Water river. This is the called the White Water Canal, and today it is the life blood for agriculture in the surrounding areas. Many come to see the canal for its historical purposes. For the settlers, it was the main ingredient for setting up an establishment that was intended to be permanent. Their idea seemed to have worked because Dearborn county has continued to thrive since the canal was installed hundreds of years ago.

Economic Stability In Dearborn County

The economy in Dearborn Indiana has proven to be quite stable. With an average growth of around 10% a year, the area is the envy of many cities in America. The benefit for this region has been the simple fact that it is removed from many really large cities by either the Ohio River, or by simple distance. The remoteness and great location on the water have afforded this small rural area a great economic advantage. Companies that need to utilize the water for their operations are attracted to this community because they have the natural resources, and there are enough people residing in the county to provide an employment base as well. The other unique quality about this part of Indiana is that many of the residents are highly educated, which means that technology companies, are manufacturing firms can expect to have their needs met by the ever prepared residents of Dearborn County.

The other beneficial aspect for both residents and businesses is the fact that the taxes are so low in the part of the state. this is an attractive quality for businesses because that means that can invest more in employment development, community benefits, and the growth of their business. This is also a nice feature for residents as they are the true recipients of the positive income that their county is receiving. This translates into better schools, roads, and overall infrastructure. The stability is also found in the types of businesses that are coming to Dearborn County. They are businesses that are not retail or consumer based, rather they are business that are in high demand for infrastructure such as construction, or technology. Both of which will continue to be in high demand as long as there are roads, computers, and the demand to maintain either. This also means that Dearborn could benefit from the fact that these businesses must always adapt to updating.

Wildlife In Dearborn County

There are hundreds of species of animals that are native to the state of Indiana, and many of the species also live in the county of Dearborn. There are conservation efforts being made to help maintain the loss of wildlife as a result of development. One of the ways that conservationist in that area are implementing changes is by making the public aware of the problems that are seen with native wildlife, their disappearance from the area, or their endangerment. For instance, Bison has been a part of the area since the original settlers. This species of animal has been placed on the extirpated list, meaning that animal is present in groups, but have not been seen in the area for more than 10 years. This is a scary reality, as this is only one of hundreds of unique animals that are considered extirpated. The endangered list is just as lengthy, and along with their rankings, conservationists are providing nature friendly ideas to try and help protect the wild life that is native to Dearborn County.

Some of the suggestions that are put out from the conservationist league is by creating nests for rare birds. Development is to blame for many of their nesting places disappearing, and inhabitants of the county can do their part to try and help. Another suggestion was eliminating a particular grass that has discouraged many types of snakes in the area to relocate. The grass is a fescue and is not native to the area, yet has taken over and it damaging native grasses, flowers, and harming ground animals that depend on the landscape for food. If you are able to make your way to Dearborn county, you will see the rural nature that the residents have worked hard to maintain. This is also evidenced in the way they strive to protect their wildlife.

Enjoy The Quiet

The county of Dearborn Indiana is considered a quiet rural area with less than 50,000 residents as of the 2007 census. This means that if you are looking for peace and quiet, you are sure to find it. It also means that you might be somewhat far from any type of airport, train, or bus depot. The closest airport is located in Fort Wayne, and is almost 200 miles away from the city of Aurora which is nearly in the middle of the county. The benefit for you, especially if you are traveling for visit, and an experience with nature, is that you will not have to deal with modern noise while you are experience all of the beautiful natural landscapes. The area is far enough removed that flight patterns would remain quite high in elevation, and that equals a quiet vacation. It is much easier to pretend you in the 1700‘s when you are looking at untouched vegetation, amazing rivers, and there is no noise from industry, transportation, or another type of sound pollution.

What also makes this nice is the fact that you are truly removed from some major modern headaches, and the modern conveniences that are available are for pure enjoyment, like casinos, and museums. Again, all things quiet for your vacation into the great wide open, or at least on your trail hike. Residents of this region have stated that they like the fact that they are somewhat removed because it keeps things local and quaint; that it is hard for their to be a large boom disrupting the flow of the county when it is a distance away from a large airport. For the traveler, this is also welcomed news as the only reason you would really want to go there for vacation is to enjoy the quiet natural aesthetics.

Dearborn County History And Economy

Dearborn County Indiana has a rich history that is filled with excitement, heartache, growing pains, and bright future. It is true what they say, there is nothing in life that is free, and Dearborn County is no exception. The territory that was one of the first was named after a war hero from the war of 1812, Dr. Henry Dearborn. He played a significant role in the region helping to create healthy relationships between settlers and Native American Indian tribes. When setters began to settle in the region, the surrounding Indian tribes were not so keen on the idea. This led to many horrific attacks, one of which was rumored to have targeted just women. This was a brutal time. As the years progressed and more and more settlers began to develop the area, the cooperation began to develop. Before long, the tribes and settlers were on friendly terms, respecting each others spaces.

Today, this history is seen on some of the trail excursion and water way canoe trips that travelers can see on a daily basis. The County today is still relatively small, ranking in the bottom 5% for population. The area is still considered predominately rural, yet the economy is thriving. The way that Dearborn County was been developed requires a constant checks and balances between elected official and the inhabitants of the county. This means that every painstaking effort is made to ensure the most efficient way to run the region. Businesses have been increasing in size, and the area is still attracting business. Many account for this growth today, with the efforts to develop a cohesive region all the way back to the original settlers and Indians. There was the philosophy that that it is best to work hard and succeed, than to not try at all.
