Dearborn County is located on the southeast border of Indiana, and is home to many bustling cities. Included in this list are Greendale, Lawrenceburg, Saint Leon, and Hidden Valley. Taking a vacation to this location can be a fun way to learn more about the history of the state.

The weather in this county is typically quite cold during the winter months, with lows of 21 degrees during January. The summer highs usually go up to 86 degrees, so it can be a nice mix of temperatures. There are over 50,000 people residing in the county. Lawrenceburg is a fun place for families to visit, boasting a ski resort with plenty of hills for snowboarding, skiing, and tubing for individuals of all levels. Those who prefer more adult activities can visit Seagrams Distillery, world famous for its whiskey, as well as a fun experience at Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg, a riverboat casino.

Guests who are looking for a more nature-themed vacation can visit Hidden Valley, which is home to plenty of wildlife. Hidden Valley Lake is a resort community where guests can relax and enjoy boating, fishing, and water skiing activities. There are also beautiful golf courses, where visitors can enjoy a day on the green. It is home to only about 5,000 so it will definitely give the feeling of seclusion.

Finding unique and fun family vacations are great ways to build memories and see new places. Many have enjoyed trips to the resort community in Hidden Valley, and Lawrenceburg features plenty of activities for parents to enjoy.

The county government of Dearborn County is similar in structure to other government entities throughout the country. It has acquired its powers from the Indiana State Constitution and is made up of several governing bodies.

The legislative branch of the Dearborn County government is the “County Council.” It is in charge of how to spend county funds and collecting revenues. The elected representatives of this body are from the various county districts. The representatives serve on this council for a term of four years. In addition to their other legislative duties they set salaries and plan the annual budget for the county. They also have, in a limited way, the power to impose taxes on local basis. This is accomplished through property tax and income taxes; however they can only impose these taxes following their approval by state government agencies.

There is also a Board of Commissioners which makes up the county’s executive body. These commissioners too are elected throughout the county. Their terms are staggered to maintain consistency throughout the county government, and each term is four years in length. Generally the commissioner who has served the longest is the president of this body. The Board of Commissioners is authorized to execute the laws which have been passed by the county council. This includes collecting revenues, and running the other day-to-day activities of this county government.

Two Supreme Courts and a Circuit Court make up the Dearborn County’s court system. The judges which preside are elected for six year terms.

The rest of the county officials include elected offices such as: prosecuting attorney, auditor, recorder, sheriff, coroner, surveyor, circuit court clerk and a treasurer.

The warm sun, the sandy beaches and the relaxed atmosphere are calling your name. You’ll want to undergo adequate preparations so that you can enjoy your ultimate vacation.

Knowing What to Pack

Packing for Barbados holidays, the Bahamas or other locations in the Caribbean is actually simpler than many other vacation spots. However, you might still want to make a list so that you take all essential items with you. The Caribbean region is typically warm year-round, so you can pack light. Don’t forget your bathing suit, shorts, flip flops and tank tops. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing hats, sunglasses and packing enough sunscreen.

If you are prone to motion sickness, you’ll also want to visit the doctor ahead of time and bring along preventive medicine. Also, remember that you are traveling to another country, so you will want to pack your passport and other identification.

Getting to the Port

Once your travel arrangements have been made and you’ve packed all essentials, it’s time to get to your cruise ship. Allow yourself adequate time to get there. Arriving two hours early is preferable to getting there two minutes too late. Factor in some cushion time in case you run into traffic or have to return home to pick up a forgotten item.

Going away on a Caribbean cruise is an exciting opportunity. Whether you are headed to Barbados, the Bahamas, Jamaica or another location, getting organized and packing well in advance will lead to a more relaxing vacation.

Although vacations are meant to be relaxing, they easily can turn into a stressful experience if the destination is one that is not familiar. The majority of this stress can come from the anticipation associated with whether or not the right resort was chosen as well as what type of meal and activity options are available in the area. Even though the fear of the unknown is in no way a reason not to take a vacation to a destination, but a surefire way to ease these stresses is to vacation at an all-inclusive resort.

At all-inclusive resorts, when the hotel room is paid for, it comes with many wonderful perks that other resorts do not offer. Instead of just offering turn-down service and complimentary continental breakfasts’, all-inclusive resorts go a step above that because all meals, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), activities, and non-motorized water sports are included within the cost of the resort stay, and all of these amenities are top notch. For example, most resorts have options such as themed restaurants, snorkeling, and casinos.

Additionally, the majority of all-inclusive resorts are located in picture perfect locations all around the Caribbean, and what a better stress-reliever than to enjoy the beauty of turquoise waters while walking along a stretch of soft white sand.

Due to the fact that some islands like Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are saturated with all-inclusive resorts, there are no “bad” all-inclsive resorts because the competition is so steep. Therefore, people who want to have a great vacation without worrying about costs and what to see and do, they should certainly consider an all-inclusive resort.

Refinancing a vehicle makes sense for some people. You may qualify for a lower interest rate, get better loan terms or be able to pay off your loan early, but it’s up to you to find out whether you qualify. Numerous companies are available in Indiana to help you with this new loan.

In Indiana, individuals should look at several lenders before choosing one. Both national and local lenders may be able to offer a car refinance loan to you. Here are some things to consider when choosing a lender:

Obtain a loan quote from the lender. This is a no obligation free way to find out how much the loan will cost you. It is also one of the best ways to compare lenders.

Know your credit score. Auto refinance companies expect you to have good credit. If you have not done so recently, check your credit report to ensure all information is up to date.

Look at the facts about the loan offered to you. What is the interest rate? How long will you need to repay the loan? What fees apply to the refinancing process? The lender provides this information up front.

Comparing loans gives you the opportunity to determine how affordable any loan may be for you. It can also help you to see how many lenders are available.

Do not turn to just your current lender to obtain refinancing. Consider local and national lenders that offer the terms you want. It’s important to know you are working with a trusted lender that has a long history of helping people to get into refinanced car loans and out of debt quickly.

Life is good! Yet maybe you’ve been staring at those old four walls just a little bit too long. It’s time for a change of scene and a new perspective. That’s right: a vacation!

A vacation is a time to get away and clear your mind of worries. What you don’t need is travel stress during your perfect two weeks of Barbados holidays. A vacation travel checklist is the key to minimizing stress on that long dreamed-of getaway.

Here are the key points to keep in mind as you prepare for travel:

Check the weather prediction and dress accordingly.

Research your destination. Choose your holiday highlights and map out how to get there. Know what areas to avoid and have a few choices in mind in case of overbooking at popular sites.

Pack light. Think through what you really need, and don’t bring more. Take washable, non-wrinkle clothing.

Bring maps! Knowing your way around your destination will cut your stress in half. Also, research travel options (car rentals, bus lines, trains) for the area you’re visiting.

Double-check crucial items like prescriptions. Have a safe place to carry money and credit cards. When possible, bring light snacks to get the family through delays when there is nothing to eat. Avoid overpaying for pricey “survival” snack food at airports.

Have crucial information (emergency numbers, bank and medical information) on cell phones, and on paper in a safe place.

Leave early. This one factor will significantly minimize stress on your vacation. Build in an extra day on your return to rest before getting back to regular responsibilities.

And, finally, have a great time!

Cruise liners offer a wide selection of cruises to accommodate virtually every potential passenger’s needs. Cruises are not just about the destination but rather the trip along the way. If you select a cruise designed for your particular needs, you may just have more fun!

Cruise Options to Consider

As you look at all the cruise deals available today, be sure to focus on those cruises that offer you something special. Here are a few of the options available:

Families – a family cruise will encompass a wide range of activities for you and the kids. While formal dinner parties and adult activities are available, there are plenty of activities for kids of all ages.

Singles – if you are single and hoping to meet someone, take a specific cruise just for that reason. Everyone on board is looking for that special someone, too.

Bachelorette or Bachelor Parties – for an evening out on the lake or a cruise over the weekend, choose a specific bachelor or bachelorette cruise. Have fun relaxing and enjoying activities that are more appropriate.

Another way to choose a cruise is based on what you hope to see or do. You may want to choose a cruise that travels around the world. On the other hand, you may just want a cruise to Alaska so you can see the vast wilderness and the whales on the trip. Choose a cruise based on what is on the ship too; such as the types of events, social gatherings and amenities offered on board.

You have plenty of options. The hard part is to decide which the best cruise option for you is.

The Dearborn County area is the home to a long-standing race track and kart racing. Lawrenceburg Speedway features Modifieds and Sprints, while Competition Racing brings European-style karting to nearby Cincinnati.
Lawrenceburg Speedway has been open since 1950 and runs from early April to the beginning of October. The course is a 3/8th of a mile clay oval and the entire racing circuit is fan-friendly. That includes camping on the fairgrounds and even a pit pass that allows fans a chance to speak to the drivers.
Camping is free with some electric and water hook-ups. There is also an antique show the first Sunday of each month at the fairgrounds.
Competition Racing is located across from the Hollywood Casino and is open for racing to the general public, while also specializing in corporate and private outings. The track measures over 950 feet in length with 11 turns per lap and wide enough for three karts to run side-by-side.
The karts are 9-horsepower and can get in excess of 35 miles per hour in the straight areas. There are youth carts for those meeting the height requirement and accompanied by a parent. The youth carts can go as fast as 25 miles per hour.
Competition Racing is open six days a week and though closed on Mondays, is still available for private parties that day. Private functions are available with at least on week notice.
Another fun feature of the racing is a digital timing system that keeps track of each racer’s position on the course. Each individual’s time is shown above the steering wheel on the kart and on television monitors during the race. Each racer even receives their time printed out upon completion of the race.

If you are interested in history, no visit to Dearborn County would be complete without seeing the Hillforest Museum and Veraestau Historic Landmark. Not only are you able to visit these historic sites, but you can also help make a difference for breast cancer.

Located in Aurora, Hillforest was named a National Historic Landmark in 1992 and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are available each Tuesday through Sunday from the start of April through the end of December. Reservations are taken for groups of 10 or more and group luncheons of 20 or more. A newer feature is a “tea time” for groups of 10 or more for a one- or three-course tea in the Hillforest parlor.

The mansion was designed for Aurora industrialist Thomas Gaff and it was part of the Gaff family from 1855 to 1891. After being owned by various people and organizations, it has been open as a museum since 1956. There are several events at the museum throughout the open season, including several revolving around ghost and paranormal activity.

By booking through the Dearborn County Convention, Visitor and Tourism Bureau, you can help raise money for breast cancer research through the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.

The Veraestau landmark was built in 1810 and though privately owned, it is operated by the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. Tours are available by appointment each Wednesday through Sunday from April through December. The tour is one hour long of the house itself and the grounds.

Located in Aurora, the home was named by Indiana Supreme Court Justice and federal judge Jesse Holman. The home has been preserved through the years and exemplifies the architectural history of the state.

There are always outdoor activities for your visit to Dearborn County, highlighted by skiing and skateboarding.

In the winter season, skiing, snowboarding, and tubing is available at the Perfect North Ski Slopes in Lawrenceburg. The slopes are usually open from mid-December to early March and feature 225 energy-efficient, high-volume snow guns.

Whether you are an experienced skier or a first-timer, North Ski Slopes has something for you. The ski area includes five chair lifts, six carpet lifts, 23 trails, and 25 tubing lanes.

Each admission ticket is valid for up to eight consecutive hours and also includes tubing. Each ticket includes a one-hour introductory skiing or riding lesson. There are also lodging packages, which include two lift tickets.

There is a separate area designed just for beginners and there are one-hour lessons available. Parents can also use this area to teach their child/children (age six and under) in addition to lessons being offered for children aged 4-6.

As many as three tubes can link together on the tubing runs. There is also a small separate tubing area for children aged 3-6 with parental supervision.

For fun when it is not winter time, a great way to have fun for free is the Lawrenceburg Skatepark. The skatepark is in great condition, about 12,000 square feet, and has three bowls of various heights. There are ledge and box combinations, regular and pool coping, cradle banks, and a street course.

Whether you are just learning how to skate or are an experienced skateboarder, this is one of the top concrete skate parks in the state. It also has lights for nighttime skating.

For animal lovers and great places to bring children in the Dearborn County area, look no further than the Red Wolf Sanctuary or the nearby Cincinnati Zoo.

The Red Wolf Sanctuary and Raptor Rehabilitation Center preserves native North American wildlife in its own habitat through environmental education and rehabilitation of injured or orphaned wildlife. Tours are available by appointment.

The Red Wolf, which was nearly extinct in the 1970’s, serves as the sanctuary’s mascot. Most of the wolves you will find there are the more common grey wolves.

The rehabilitated animals change from time to time since some are released after being rehabilitated, but you are likely to see black bears, coyotes, red foxes, and often owls, hawks, or cougars.

The Raptor Center allows visitors to overlook a 100-acre prairie, home to Bald Eagles, Red Tail Hawks, and various other raptors, fowl, and sing birds.

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is located just 20 miles from Lawrenceburg and is one of the most famous zoos in the country. The zoo is the second-oldest in the United States and its Reptile House is the oldest zoo building in America, dating back to 1875 when the zoo itself was built.

The zoo features more than 500 animal and 3,000 plant species as well as various exhibits. In addition to simply covering the zoo’s grounds, there are self-guided tours focused on kids’ favorites, indoor exhibits to stay out of the elements, and a section of endangered species that the zoo is dedicated to saving.

There are various exhibits at the zoo, including newer projects such as “Night Hunters” and an “African Savannah” featuring such animals as Maasai giraffes and cheetahs. Adults and children alike have the opportunity to feed giraffes at “Giraffe Ridge”, get up close to a polar bear, or watch elephants get their baths among other opportunities.

The Chateau Pomije Vineyard and Winery is located near Lawrenceburg, Brookville, and Lawrenceburg, Indiana and hosts special functions in addition to making wine from grapes in its own vineyard.

The vineyard sprawls over 100 acres in Southeast Indiana and features a 5,000-square foot banquet facility. Wine can be customized for any upcoming special event.

The Lawrenceburg Fairgrounds host the state’s largest “Antiques and Vintage-only” market and is open every first Sunday from May through October. The market began in 1985 and all merchandise is at least 30 years old and no longer in production.

There are frequently more than 200 dealers per month with items from all over the U.S. and even other countries. The event takes place regardless of the weather conditions with indoor and undercover dealers.

If you can’t make it to the market or visit Dearborn County in the off-season, the Lawrenceburg Antique Gallery hosts booths rented by antique dealers.

The Dearborn Highlands Arts Council promotes arts in and around Dearborn County with Performing Arts Series events held regularly at the Lawrenceburg High School Auditorium.

The council also supports a one-day celebration of performing and visual arts called “Arts Alive! Arts Fair.” Booths highlight local artists and cultural organizations. “Concert in the Park” is an evening concert in the Aurora City Park Pavilion.

Various other artistic events are held in the Dearborn area, including educational components of the council involving students and aspiring artists.

Dearborn County in Indiana features two nearby casinos and race tracks for great fun and entertainment.

The Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg sits on the banks of the Ohio River, minutes from I-275. It features 3,200 slots and electronic table games, more than 88 table games, and 41 live poker tables.

The Argosy Casino and Hotel is also located in Lawrenceburg and contains three levels with restaurants, bars, and lounges. The Argosy VI is a riverboat casino with more than 2,000 slot machines and 97 game tables on three decks. There is also a 300-room hotel on the site.

Each of the properties provide gambling on the riverboats as they cruise the waters of the Ohio River and each are located about 20 minutes from Cincinnati.

For those interested in horse racing and betting, there are great opportunities in Cincinnati (fewer than 30 miles away) and Louisville (less than 100 miles from Dearborn County).

Thoroughbred racing is held in the spring and summer at River Downs in Cincinnati as it has been since 1925. It featured two appearances by Seabiscuit in 1936 and its 1976 apprentice and overall jockey leader Steve Cauthen launched his Hall of Fame career that included the most recent Triple Crown winner Affirmed at the track.

Louisville is the site of Churchill Downs, one of the most famous horse tracks in the United States and home of the Kentucky Derby the first Saturday of each May in the beginning of the racing season at the track. “The Run for the Roses” began in 1875 and has become one of the greatest spectacles in American sports.

Whether you are looking for the fun and excitement of the casino experience or love to “play the horses”, Dearborn County and nearby places offer great opportunities.

The Rivertown Players are a non-profit community theatre organization. Rivertown Players, Inc. was designed with the set purpose to “promote, encourage, and develop” theatre and musical theatre appreciation while featuring the talented members of the Southeastern Indiana community. Rivertown Players, Inc. operates through a combination of ticket sale revenue, community patronage, and membership revenue.

A Typical RTP Season

Each Rivertown Players season includes a summer musical and a comedy or drama. The chorus performs two shows each year. In 2010, the choir performed a choral concert at Christmas and another choral concert in the spring. To give you an example of a Rivertown Players theatre season, the 2010/2011 season included Eleemosynary, a one-act play about three generations of women, Alice in Wonderland, Jr., a musical for young performers, Haunting at Hillforest, and the classic musical Evita.

History

The Rivertown Players origins date back to 1982, when Southeastern Indiana residents banded together to form a community theatre called Community Activities. Their first performance was a July 1982 performance of well-loved musical Fiddler on the Roof. Next year, “Community Activities, Inc.” became “Rivertown Players, Inc.” Over time, the Chorus and Junior programs were added in addition to the year’s theatre season. Over the years, the Rivertown Players have performed theatre classics like “Kiss Me Kate,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “Inherit the Wind,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Steel Magnolias,” and “Oklahoma.”

The Chorus

The Rivertown Players Chorus was designed for people who don’t crave the theatre spotlight but love to sing. The chorus practices every Sunday evening and offers a relaxed atmosphere for people to perform choral arrangements. The chorus performs a wide variety of song selections, from Broadway to gospel, from classical to rock and roll.

RTP, Jr.

The junior program was developed so young performers could gain experience on and off stage. The cutoff age is 18 years old. One performance per season is a dedicated RTP, Jr. show. The RTP, Jr. program is a very hands-on program that offers experience in all aspects of theatre, including make-up, costumes, singing, choreography, and technical design.

There’s plenty of outdoor recreation to be had in Indiana’s Dearborn County. These parks will have you and your family enjoying the wild outdoors of Indiana in no time at all. All of the Dearborn local parks maintain their own blog to keep the public informed of ongoing events and reservations.

Gladys Russell Wildlife Refuge

This 148-acre park is a perfect way to explore the great outdoors without the fuss and development of larger parks. The Gladys Russell Wildlife Refuge is a great place for hiking, horseback riding, birdwatching, picnicking, and fishing. The refuge contains four miles of walking or riding trails. A recent addition to the park is a large meeting shelter that contains bathrooms. Fishermen and women will love the six acre lake that’s stocked with bass, bluegill, and catfish. The Wildlife Refuge also contains bird houses and duck boxes.

Bright Meadows Community Park

The Bright Meadows Community Park is definitely a park with an emphasis on the community, rather than an emphasis on nature like the Gladys Russell Wildlife Refuge. The park contains a fun playground for children and a variety of athletic fields. The park contains three baseball fields and a soccer/pee wee football field. Shelter houses are ideal for meetings or lunchtime breaks. Two parking locations can be found within the park for visitor convenience.

Guilford Covered Bridge Park

How often will your family get to visit a historic covered bridge? As the name suggests, the Guilford Covered Bridge Park contains the recently restored Guilford Covered Bridge. The bridge is a county landmark and a hotspot for tourists who stop while passing through. The park is the oldest of the Dearborn local parks and the park also provides access to Tanners Creek. Also located within the park is a playground, bathroom, shelter house, and basketball court.

Rullman Wildlife Refuge

The Rullman family generously donated 80 acres for park-goers to get some fresh air, fish, or enjoy nature.

County Farm Park

The community and lake were built by a land developer and did not occur in nature. The census-designated place has a population of 4,417.

There are three major water ways in the the Dearborn County area. These major water ways began their existence when glaciers were melting and they helped to carve and divert paths for the streams, rivers, and lakes that are seen all across the state of Indiana. These water ways are by no means considered small, and they have been providing life saving, town making water for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The first of the major water ways is the Ohio River. This river is the life force for much of the industry seen on both the Indiana side, and the Ohio side. For Dearborn County, this means that mills are able to operate, and contribute revenue. The Ohio river is also used for entertainment purposes for casinos that are located within Dearborn County for the purpose of river boat casino adventures.

The second river is the Blue River. This river is vital the surrounding area for the wildlife, plant life, and for farming. Today it is used as a way to take campers and tourist on canoe tours of covered bridges, and other historically scenic venues. The final river is the White Water River. This river has a nice history about it, as it was the one major contributing element for settlement. When settlers began entering what is now Dearborn County, they developed a plan to divert some of the water from the White Water river. This is the called the White Water Canal, and today it is the life blood for agriculture in the surrounding areas. Many come to see the canal for its historical purposes. For the settlers, it was the main ingredient for setting up an establishment that was intended to be permanent. Their idea seemed to have worked because Dearborn county has continued to thrive since the canal was installed hundreds of years ago.

The economy in Dearborn Indiana has proven to be quite stable. With an average growth of around 10% a year, the area is the envy of many cities in America. The benefit for this region has been the simple fact that it is removed from many really large cities by either the Ohio River, or by simple distance. The remoteness and great location on the water have afforded this small rural area a great economic advantage. Companies that need to utilize the water for their operations are attracted to this community because they have the natural resources, and there are enough people residing in the county to provide an employment base as well. The other unique quality about this part of Indiana is that many of the residents are highly educated, which means that technology companies, are manufacturing firms can expect to have their needs met by the ever prepared residents of Dearborn County.

The other beneficial aspect for both residents and businesses is the fact that the taxes are so low in the part of the state. this is an attractive quality for businesses because that means that can invest more in employment development, community benefits, and the growth of their business. This is also a nice feature for residents as they are the true recipients of the positive income that their county is receiving. This translates into better schools, roads, and overall infrastructure. The stability is also found in the types of businesses that are coming to Dearborn County. They are businesses that are not retail or consumer based, rather they are business that are in high demand for infrastructure such as construction, or technology. Both of which will continue to be in high demand as long as there are roads, computers, and the demand to maintain either. This also means that Dearborn could benefit from the fact that these businesses must always adapt to updating.

There are hundreds of species of animals that are native to the state of Indiana, and many of the species also live in the county of Dearborn. There are conservation efforts being made to help maintain the loss of wildlife as a result of development. One of the ways that conservationist in that area are implementing changes is by making the public aware of the problems that are seen with native wildlife, their disappearance from the area, or their endangerment. For instance, Bison has been a part of the area since the original settlers. This species of animal has been placed on the extirpated list, meaning that animal is present in groups, but have not been seen in the area for more than 10 years. This is a scary reality, as this is only one of hundreds of unique animals that are considered extirpated. The endangered list is just as lengthy, and along with their rankings, conservationists are providing nature friendly ideas to try and help protect the wild life that is native to Dearborn County.

Some of the suggestions that are put out from the conservationist league is by creating nests for rare birds. Development is to blame for many of their nesting places disappearing, and inhabitants of the county can do their part to try and help. Another suggestion was eliminating a particular grass that has discouraged many types of snakes in the area to relocate. The grass is a fescue and is not native to the area, yet has taken over and it damaging native grasses, flowers, and harming ground animals that depend on the landscape for food. If you are able to make your way to Dearborn county, you will see the rural nature that the residents have worked hard to maintain. This is also evidenced in the way they strive to protect their wildlife.

The county of Dearborn Indiana is considered a quiet rural area with less than 50,000 residents as of the 2007 census. This means that if you are looking for peace and quiet, you are sure to find it. It also means that you might be somewhat far from any type of airport, train, or bus depot. The closest airport is located in Fort Wayne, and is almost 200 miles away from the city of Aurora which is nearly in the middle of the county. The benefit for you, especially if you are traveling for visit, and an experience with nature, is that you will not have to deal with modern noise while you are experience all of the beautiful natural landscapes. The area is far enough removed that flight patterns would remain quite high in elevation, and that equals a quiet vacation. It is much easier to pretend you in the 1700‘s when you are looking at untouched vegetation, amazing rivers, and there is no noise from industry, transportation, or another type of sound pollution.

What also makes this nice is the fact that you are truly removed from some major modern headaches, and the modern conveniences that are available are for pure enjoyment, like casinos, and museums. Again, all things quiet for your vacation into the great wide open, or at least on your trail hike. Residents of this region have stated that they like the fact that they are somewhat removed because it keeps things local and quaint; that it is hard for their to be a large boom disrupting the flow of the county when it is a distance away from a large airport. For the traveler, this is also welcomed news as the only reason you would really want to go there for vacation is to enjoy the quiet natural aesthetics.

The territory that was one of the first was named after a war hero from the war of 1812, Dr. Henry Dearborn. He played a significant role in the region helping to create healthy relationships between settlers and Native American Indian tribes. When setters began to settle in the region, the surrounding Indian tribes were not so keen on the idea. This led to many horrific attacks, one of which was rumored to have targeted just women. This was a brutal time. As the years progressed and more and more settlers began to develop the area, the cooperation began to develop. Before long, the tribes and settlers were on friendly terms, respecting each others spaces.

Today, this history is seen on some of the trail excursion and water way canoe trips that travelers can see on a daily basis. The County today is still relatively small, ranking in the bottom 5% for population. The area is still considered predominately rural, yet the economy is thriving. The way that Dearborn County was been developed requires a constant checks and balances between elected official and the inhabitants of the county. This means that every painstaking effort is made to ensure the most efficient way to run the region. Businesses have been increasing in size, and the area is still attracting business. Many account for this growth today, with the efforts to develop a cohesive region all the way back to the original settlers and Indians. There was the philosophy that that it is best to work hard and succeed, than to not try at all.

The Government structure in Dearborn County Indiana is not too different than that of other cities across the country. The key difference is that primary jobs in most cities are elected positions in this rural part of Indiana. Some of the elected officials include County Clerk, and Coroner. In many other parts of the country these are hired personnel, and are working directly with county as county employees. The courts in this area are small as well, with only three main court houses for all nine cities and towns. This means that some residents have to travel a significant distance in order to get to a federal court house. The city of Aurora and Lawrenceburg have two of their own court houses, but these only handle local matters, and the judges that are elected have a different term criteria than that of the federal county judges. The judges for all court houses are also elected officials that are operating on staggered terms. This way only one new judge, if a replacement is elected, will see a chair in a given year. Some of the other positions that see a possible turnover is Sheriff, Surveyor, and Recorder. Again, these are positions that many cities view as employment and not elected officials, but the efficiency in which the county is run makes one wonder if this is not such a bad idea.

This is a unique featureas it requires elected officials to either complete their positions with absolute responsibility or face being voted out by the counties 46,000 plus population. The county also elects officials for councils, but meets the federal election criteria for positions such as senator or governor. The government structure is intended to ensure the best possible, and most responsible, actions in order to lead the county in the right direction. This has so far worked as planned as the county is thriving with businesses, andfamilies making Dearborn County their home.

Dearborn County Indiana boasts an amazing collection of covered bridges that were built in the late 1700′s to the mid 1800′s. These bridges were the only passageways for travelers to cross over some of the larger rivers like the Ohio, White Water, and Blue River. Today the stand as a reminder of the areas rich history. As a traveler you can experience these in person in a couple of different ways. First you can make your way walking the Aurora Trail, and major trail that used to be used by Indians and service men for trade routes and during war time. Trails is approximately two miles long, and the entire trip can be done in a day. While on your trail, you will see amazing streams, plant life, and of course, covered bridges. These are fascinating site to see as our modern day culture has forgotten about these types of structures, not does it really appreciate the beauty and design. The second way to experience these fantastic structures is by rafting down the Blue River. You will see things on the bank that will make you think it is in the early 1700′s and you are an early settler. The best way to see all of the bridges is by doing what the Native Americans that were local to the area, canoe down the river.

Many of Dearborn County’s camp sites are located next to these waterways and covered bridges so that the walk or hike will be accomplished easily in a day. They are situated so that each site can provide their own unique experience of what the beautiful county has t offer. If you are interested rich history, and beautiful covered bridges, then you have found where some of the countries finest are in place, maintained, and preserved.

There are a lot of prospering and thriving businesses in Dearborn County Indiana. The amount of work that is booming in that county is really diverse, and there are offerings for just about any skill level and education level. Much of the industry that is popping up is technological based, and that means that IT is a major option for those seeking careers in that field. The business in Dearborn County is helping to boost the economy in that area because there are certain tax concessions that they have to make in order to operate their business in that area, and to have received a business licence. This means that residents are able to benefit through improved schools, roads, and overall development projects. The tax base in this area is lower than other places in the United States, which also means that this is an attractive place for businesses to come and open up shop.

Some of the businesses in Dearborn County include construction companies, attorneys, IT, schools, consumer shopping stores, and other vocational businesses like manufacturing. This means that the area is not saturated with one type of business, and the diversity helps to further promote a healthy economy. In fact, Dearborn County has seen a steady growth of businesses coming to their county for the last decade. Basically put, regardless of the economic downturns, the country has continued to grow as a nice slow and steady pace. This is key for areas if they wish to survive tough times because they usually are not affected by the great highs and lows of the economy. For businesses, that is a very important aspect. They cannot remain operational if their customers are not able to continue purchasing. This is why businesses feel safe here, because they really are, and that does not just benefit the businesses, it benefits everyone in the community.

Dearborn County Indiana is a beautiful natural area that promotes healthy living, and treasure their natural resources and wildlife. The area prides itself on being associated with, and having direct historical pasts with multiple Native American Tribes such as the Algonquian, Delaware, and the Miami tribes. There is a rich history, and bright future in this county, as despite the current economic conditions, they are still growing and attracting business to settle there. The area has a lush feel with the natural landscape, and the residents work very hard to maintain that natural feeling.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you have a young family, or you simply are not a large city type of person, but like the offerings of a big city, this is place that you might want to considering investigating. The cost of living is low compared to the national average, yet the industry is much higher in pay scale, and community contributions than that of what you see in the large cities. The Government structure is still basic and considered equal compared to the other counties in Indiana, but the rural vibe that has been encouraged also means that individual in the local government are approachable, and willing to listen. There are a total of five official cities in the county with Bright being the largest having approximately 5,800 residents. It is quite a trade off, low cost of living, great potential for jobs, and no crowds.

The economy has been able to steadily maintain or grow because the area was not hugely impacted by the housing boom, and therefore did not suffer much of the fall-out. Jobs are ranging in different types of industries, with many positions being available in the technical trade. Dearborn County truly epitimizes living green, and if this is something that interests you as well, take the time to investigate.

Dearborn county Indiana has seen tremendous growth, despite the tough economic times that have been seen in recent years. Many believe this to be because of the accommodating nature towards business, while other say it is the vast educated employee base that is available to large corporations. For a county that is just under 48,000 in population, they maintain over 20 large manufacturing facilities, and countless other that are involved with medical, plastics, and other non-manufacturing trades. This also does not include hospitals and schools. All in all, Dearborn County is a gold mine for those that are seeking a job, and a place to call home.

The economy has seen a steady growth in the last few years, and with the county ranked 27th in the state for population, the economical growth is ranking much higher. The cost of living makes this county appealing to young educated families, or to those that have a skilled craft. The education provided in this county is also top notch, which help reaffirm the offerings for young families. The average yearly growth in population has been a steady 9% annually. This is a stark contrast to towns that have been quoted as losing so many people that housing areas are beginning to look like ghost towns. In an economic climate like what we have been experiencing, finding a prosperous area is a winning shot. In Dearborn county, that seems to be the case, in fact, they are still attracting industry to their town, which means that not only is their population growing, but their business is as well. That equals sustainability, and for young families, that is priceless. The struggles that so many people have had to deal with, seems to be outside the small county, as they seem to be insulated from the difficulties that many states and individual counties have had to endure.

Others, with flat tops, were temples for worship. Most of the mounds along the Ohio River were built in the 12th or 13th centuries.

Following the Mound Builders, Indiana and the Northwest Territory was inhabited by the Algonquian Indians. The principal tribes of the Algonquian are the Miami, Shawnee and Delaware.

Through the American Revolution of 1775, and the heroic efforts of Col. George Rogers Clark, the Americans secured the Northwest Territory.

George Washington was president when the first settlers made their way down the Ohio River to Dearborn County. Among the earliest were Adam Flake and his family, who settled on South Hogan Creek in 1796. A battalion of troops was stationed on the right bank of the Great Miami River to guard the exposed settlements from occasional Indian attacks.

The area that is now Dearborn County originally was part of Hamilton County, Ohio. On April 30, 1802, Congress re-established the eastern boundary line making the area part of the Indiana Territory.

On March 7, 1803, William Henry Harrison, first governor of the Indiana Territory, formed Dearborn County by proclamation. It was named in honor of Maj. Gen. Henry Dearborn, secretary of war under President Thomas Jefferson.

If you are traveling with your significant other or in an adults-only party, you can find plenty of grown-up things to do in Dearborn County. These include visiting riverboat casinos, horse tracks, a winery, and, of course, browsing through art museums and antique malls and shops.

Make plans to stop by the Chateau Pomije Winery, Restaurant, and Banquet Hall in Guilford. This is a family-owned enterprise which started out in 1973 as just two acres of French-American grapes. It now encompasses over 100 acres, and the types of grapes grown include Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. These types of grapes are not particularly hardy to cold water, so for the family to have successfully cultivated them in the Midwest (of which Indiana and subsequently Dearborn County is a part) is an amazing thing. Hours are Tuesday-Thursday and Sunday Noon-8; Friday and Saturday, Noon-10:00 PM. The winery is closed on Mondays.

Do you like to visit casinos? The Argosy Hotel and Casino as well as the Hollywood Casino are both riverboat casino properties located on the part of the Ohio River that runs through Dearborn County. Both casino properties feature slot machines as table games. In addition, there are at least six restaurants on the properties themselves.

In addition to casino gambling, you are only 27 miles away from Cincinnati, OH, and only about 97 miles away from Louisville, KY. In both states, you will find horse racing venues, if you like to “play the ponies”

Traveling with adults means getting to do fun things like visiting art galleries and going antique shopping. Dearborn County has several antique malls and shops in many of the towns that make up the county. In addition, Lawrenceburg has several art galleries as well as an art museum.

Are you relocating to the Cincinnati area of Ohio or to the Dearborn County area of Indiana for any reason? Then, consider calling Dearborn County home.

Dearborn County is located only 27 miles from Cincinnati, Ohio. Because of its close proximity, the County is considered to be in the Cincinnati, Ohio, metropolitan area. In addition, Dearborn County is approximately 97 miles from Louisville, Kentucky. So, living in Dearborn County automatically gives you access to three different states, with their many attractions and amenities.

The cost of living in Dearborn County is 10.80% lower than the national average. Put in simple terms, this means it is cheaper to live in Dearborn County than in other parts of the country. Do you have school-age children? You will be glad to know that approximately $4,990 is spent per school-age child. Class sizes average approximately 18 children per teacher.

There is also plenty of comfort for the senior citizens, Dearborn County takes good care of its veteran neighbors and provides great at home care or assisted living facilities, which are catered to meet individual needs. Many of them are a short driving distance and allow for lots of visiting hours.

There is plenty of land in rural Dearborn County for building your dream home. Or, if you wish, choose from one of the older structures in the historic districts or live right in the heart of downtown Lawrenceburg in one of the loft apartments that have been recently renovated and are now available.

Mortgage prices are fairly reasonable, when compared with other parts of the country. However, if you prefer to rent, you will be glad to know that rental amounts are also very moderate. Depending on what you decide to do—buy or rent—you should be able to find a home you can afford.

Again, remember that you are very close to Cincinnati, OH. So, even if you work in Dearborn County, you can find affordable housing just across the state line, if you need to. However, you will most likely be able to stay right in Dearborn County, where you can enjoy all that it has to offer.

If you’re looking for somewhere different to spend either your summer vacation or your winter vacation, consider Dearborn County, Indiana. There are plenty of family attractions in or near the County that will appeal to everyone.

Do you like to visit National Historic Landmarks? Hillforest in Dearborn County is home to the Hillforest Mansion, where industrialist and financier Thomas Gaff and his family lived between 1855 and 1891. The mansion was close to the Ohio River, and indeed was situated in such a way that it overlooked the river. The river, where riverboats supplied shipping capabilities to such families as the Gaffs, was so much a part of the Gaff business that part of the third floor was designed to resemble the pilot house of a riverboat. The mansion was awarded National Historic Landmark status in 1992.

Are you or your children interested in conservation, particularly as it involves animal species? In that case, you and your family will enjoy visiting the Red Wolf Sanctuary. This sanctuary is conveniently located just three miles west of Dillsboro, on State Route 62, and features such animals as the red wolf, grey wolf, and coyote.

The sanctuary prides itself on providing as natural a habitat setting as possible. Further, the sanctuary does not engage in the practice of removing animals from the wild, and any animals brought to them is released as soon as it is determined they can survive. Reservations are required to visit this home to these as well as other animals.

Did you know you can ski in Dearborn County? You can, at the Perfect North Slopes. There are trails for people with all types of ski experience, including easy trails, double black-diamond challenges, and even a 750-foot tubing run.

Like many states, Indiana has begun to allow gaming facilities such as casinos in and around different parts of the State. Dearborn County is one such area, and boasts two casinos: the Argosy Casino and Hotel and the Hollywood Casino.

Both of these properties are considered dock side riverboat casinos. Gambling is done on the riverboats themselves as they cruise the waters of the Ohio River.

The casinos have both slot machines and table games. The table games include Blackjack, Roulette, Caribbean Stud Poker and Spanish 21, just to name a few. Gambling can only be done by those 21 and over. No one under 21 can be present at gambling tables or machines, or can make bets.

There are at least six restaurants located on the casinos’ properties. In addition, there are 300 rooms available on the Argosy Hotel and Casino property, making it possible for you to stay close to all the action.

The casinos are located within the city limits of Lawrenceburg, and both the city and Dearborn County receive benefits from the casinos. These benefits come in the form of 20% of the winnings being paid to the State, of which Lawrenceburg gets one-fourth of that. Further each person who boards the casino riverboat pays a $3 admissions tax; one-third goes to Lawrenceburg, one-third to Dearborn County, and one-third to the State of Indiana.

There are other ways in which Dearborn County and Lawrenceburg benefit from the riverboat casinos. These include partial funding of a highway improvement project, the upgrade of a wastewater treatment plant that will treat the water used by the cities of Lawrenceburg, Aurora, and Greendale and, of course, the increased business that restaurants, stores, and gas stations in the area have already seen and will continue to see.

Sometimes those traveling through different parts of the country may wish they knew a little bit more about the State and local laws governing the cities and counties they pass through. This may be especially true when it comes to Driving Under the Influence laws, especially since many states have adopted more stringent codes, as well as laws regarding the use of seat belts.

In the State of Indiana, where Dearborn County is located, you are considered Driving Under the Influence if your blood alcohol content is .08% or higher. The amount of alcohol in your blood is determined by a chemical test, which is performed either by a breath, blood, or urine sample. Because Indiana is an “implied consent” state, if you refuse to submit to a chemical test, you will lose your license for one year.

If the test shows that are considered DUI, you will first go to court to deal with the criminal aspects of the DUI offense. Here you can be fined and/or sentenced to a brief jail sentence. From there, you will have to go through a civil proceeding held by the Indiana Department of Motor Vehicles. At this proceeding, the decision of whether or not to revoke your license will be made. Pretty much the same advice applies to Indiana as it does elsewhere: DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!

Now, as for seat belt laws. If you are driving OR riding in a vehicle in Indiana, EVERYONE—driver and passengers, no matter where they are sitting in the vehicle, must wear a seat belt. This means front and back seat passengers must all be wearing seat belts. Now that you know this, drive safely, and enjoy your trip to Dearborn County. We want you to have good memories of your visit with us.

We thought you might enjoy learning a little about the history of Dearborn County, Indiana. Dearborn County is located in southeastern Indiana, along the Ohio River. It is situated so close to Cincinnati, Ohio (27 miles away to be exact) that is considered part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Louisville, KY is only 110 miles away, which makes the attractions found in these two states as well as Indiana very close to Dearborn County.

Dearborn County is Indiana’s third-oldest county, and is named for Major General Henry Dearborn. Major General Dearborn served as Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson.

Before Major General Dearborn, or even the earliest settlers, among whom was Adam Flake and his family, the area that is now known as Dearborn County was occupied by Native Americans (First Nations) who were referred to as “Mound Builders”. This is because they built mounds that served either as final resting places for their dead or as temple sites. The Mound Builders were present in the 12th or 13th centuries, then followed by the Algonquian Indians.

The American Revolution helped secure the Northwest Territory, of which Dearborn County was considered a part, and settlers began to travel down the Ohio River. At first, what is now known as Dearborn County was part of Hamilton County, Ohio; however, re-establishment of the eastern boundary line by Congressional edict placed it within the Indiana territory. On March 7, 1803, Dearborn County, Indiana, was formed through proclamation of William Henry Harrison, who was Indiana Territory’s first governor.

Dearborn County, Indiana, is home to several famous people. These include Lonnie Mack, a rock/blues guitarist-vocalist; Suzanne Tuberville, wife of former Auburn University Head Football Coach Tommy Tuberville; Thomas R. Marshall, the 28th U. S. Vice-President (under Woodrow Wilson); and Joe Benz, who played for the Chicago White Sox from 1911-1919.

What are you hungry for? Good old American food or something more exotic? Do you like to try new places or do you prefer to stick to the tried-and-true? You can pretty much do any or all of the above in Dearborn County.

For American Food, try the Aurora Country Kitchen, located in Aurora, one of the cities in Dearborn County. Or, if you like Mexican food, try the Acapulco Mexican Restaurant, with locations in Lawrenceburg, Aurora, and Rising Sun.

Hungry for pizza? Try Angilo’s or Buzzy’s NYPD pizza restaurants in Lawrenceburg, or Larosa’s Pizzeria in neighboring Greendale. If you want to order a pizza to eat in your hotel room, Papa John’s is waiting for your call.

Do you like Mediterranean and Vegetarian food, served in a location that also has a wine bar? Then 3rd and Main (that’s the restaurant, not the location) in Aurora is the one you want. Or enjoy international and American cuisine, including seafood at Applewood by the River in Aurora.

Several chain restaurants, such as Bob Evans, Golden Corral, and Steak ‘N Shake is also located in Lawrenceburg and nearby cities. You can also choose from your favorite fast-food restaurants, such as McDonald’s and Burger King.

Much of Dearborn County is located on the Ohio River, and there are several restaurants that not only offer good food but a beautiful view of the river itself. These include the Riverwatch Restaurant and others in Aurora.

If you like Oriental food, you can eat at China Wok, the Grand China, or the Dragon Restaurant. These are located either right in Dearborn County, or just over the State line in Kentucky or Ohio.

The Argosy Casino and Hotel property has six restaurants to choose from. You are only steps away from any of them when you stay and play at that location.

No matter when you take your vacation, you can still visit Dearborn County and find plenty to do. That’s because Dearborn County is located on the Ohio River, which makes it possible to enjoy water activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, and just about anything else you can think of to do on the water.

At least nine separate marinas and yacht clubs, many of which are open to the public, give you easy access to the water. Eight of the marinas are located in Aurora, which is one of Dearborn County’s cities, and one is located in Lawrenceburg, the County Seat.

Each marina offers different amenities. Some may have showers and camping facilities, which include water and electric hookup. Others offer such luxury amenities as valet service and Wi-Fi. Still others provide dry docking facilities, ice (one marina actually has an on-site icehouse), and even parts service.

For winter vacationers, the Perfect North Slopes, where you can snow tube (no skis or boards allowed) all day for just $20 Monday through Thursday, and $25 on the weekend days, is also located in Dearborn County. Prices are lower for children and senior citizens. So, there is plenty for you to do in Dearborn County all year long.

Dearborn prides itself on its availability and loyalty to its tourists. Dearborn takes every precaution during the winter seasons to allow travelers to get the vacation that they paid for.

When you visit Dearborn County, Indiana, you will have your choice of a number of places to stay. These include several chain hotels, such as the Holiday Inn Express, which has locations both in Dearborn County as well as Cincinnati, OH (remember, you are just 27 miles away), and the Quality Inn Casinos.

Both hotels listed, as well as others, are near many of the attractions in and around Dearborn County. These include museums as well as the Perfect North Slopes, which offer winter skiing opportunities, as well as some casinos.

These hotels, like others in their category, are family-friendly. They have amenities such as indoor swimming pools and fitness centers, and some of them are completely non-smoking facilities. Others have designated smoking and non-smoking rooms. There are also a number of bed and breakfast establishments located in and around Dearborn County. Lawrenceburg, which is the County Seat, has two—Greenbrier and Tuggle’s Folly.

There are at least seven other bed and breakfast establishments within ten miles of Lawrenceburg. Some of them are in the State of Indiana; others are located either in Kentucky or Ohio. Remember, you are very close to both Dayton and Cincinnati in Ohio, and Louisville and Lexington, in Kentucky, are only about an hour to an hour and a half away.

If you like to gamble, try the Argosy Casino and Hotel. This hotel is located on property that includes a dock side riverboat casino. Gambling cruises leave every two hours, so you can choose the time when you would like to leave your hotel room to try your luck at the slot machines and table games. When you return, there are six restaurants, also on casino property, from which to choose for your dining experience.
